ZANDVOORT, Netherlands :  Max Verstappen has signed a contract extension with Red Bull through the end of 2030, ending speculation over the four-time world champion’s Formula One future.

The 28-year-old’s previous deal ran until the end of 2028, but performance-related clauses were understood to have provided a potential route out if Red Bull failed to deliver a competitive car.

Verstappen has yet to win a race this season, with two second-place finishes his best results. Red Bull are fourth in the constructors’ standings after 11 races, while Verstappen is sixth, 110 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes.

The Dutchman is preparing for his home Grand Prix at Zandvoort this weekend, with the circuit set to host its final race before dropping off the calendar.

VERSTAPPEN ENDS EXIT SPECULATION

Verstappen had been linked with potential moves to Mercedes and McLaren amid Red Bull’s difficult start to the new technical era.

McLaren are set to employ Verstappen’s race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase from 2028 at the latest, while Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had also been linked with an approach for the Dutchman.

Verstappen had previously suggested he could consider leaving Formula One because of his concerns over the sport’s new regulations.

“I am really pleased with the contract extension,” Verstappen said in a Red Bull statement.

“We have the best people and I’m excited to keep working together with everyone to get back to the top again. This remains the ultimate goal that all of us have been working towards and will continue to pursue.”

Verstappen joined Red Bull’s junior programme in 2014 and has won all four of his world titles with the team.

“I have always said it: The team is like a second family for me and I feel very at home,” he said. “To continue this journey with the same Team that I have been with my whole career is really special.”

Team principal Laurent Mekies said the new agreement reflected the relationship between Verstappen and Red Bull.

“Since the very beginning, Max has embodied everything that makes Oracle Red Bull Racing special: uncompromising competitiveness, relentless determination and the courage to challenge convention,” Mekies said.

“But we are not done yet. There are more races to win, more milestones to achieve and more history to write.”

ALONSO NOW IN FOCUS

Red Bull are using their own power unit in partnership with Ford for the first time this season. The engine has shown promising performance despite the team’s difficult start to the new engine and chassis regulations.

Verstappen’s extension removes one of the biggest uncertainties from the driver market, with Mercedes and McLaren expected to retain their line-ups for 2027.

Williams have also confirmed Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon for next season, narrowing the number of potential openings.

Attention is now likely to turn to Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, with the two-time world champion yet to confirm whether he will continue beyond this season.

Other potential vacancies could emerge at Haas, where Esteban Ocon’s future remains uncertain, and Cadillac, who replaced founding team principal Graeme Lowdon earlier this month.
