Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga claimed the biggest victory of his career on Wednesday, upsetting world number nine and top seed Flavio Cobolli of Italy 6-2 6-4 in the second round of the Croatia Open in Umag.
Burruchaga earned his first career victory over a top-10 opponent by converting four of seven break points and winning 78.1% of his first-serve points.
Cobolli was playing his first match since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
Burruchaga will next face seventh-seeded compatriot Camilo Ugo Carabelli, who recovered to beat Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 3-6 7-5 7-5.
Spain’s Daniel Merida also claimed an upset, defeating third-seeded Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-5 6-4.
Second seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain avoided an early exit with a 6-4 7-5 victory over Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti, while fourth-seeded Italian Matteo Arnaldi beat Argentine qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez 6-3 5-7 6-3.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Damir Dzumhur, Slovakia’s Alex Molcan and France’s Titouan Droguet also advanced to the quarter-finals.
Borges advances in Bastad
Former champion Nuno Borges cruised past Bulgarian wild card Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the Nordea Open in Bastad, Sweden.
The fifth-seeded Portuguese player needed just 65 minutes to complete victory and will next face defending champion Luciano Darderi after the Italian second seed defeated Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-4 6-4.
Fourth seed Mariano Navone of Argentina was eliminated by fellow Italian Stefano Travaglia, who won 6-4 6-2.
Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo rallied to beat sixth-seeded Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 4-6 6-3 7-6(4), becoming the first Paraguayan to reach an ATP Tour quarter-final since Ramon Delgado in 2006.
Rinderknech survives marathon in Gstaad
France’s fourth seed Arthur Rinderknech saved two match points before defeating qualifier Clement Tabur 6-7(9) 7-6(5) 7-5 in an all-French second-round contest at the Swiss Open in Gstaad.
Rinderknech battled for three hours and 21 minutes, recovering after Tabur came within two points of victory in the second-set tiebreak before securing the decisive break late in the final set.
Third-seeded Valentin Vacherot of Monaco marked his return from a foot injury with a 4-6 6-3 6-4 win over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in his first match since the French Open.
Belgium’s seventh seed Raphael Collignon defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(2) 7-6(5).
The second-round match between Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas and Swiss wild card Jerome Kym was suspended because of darkness with the deciding set level at 5-5 after the pair split the opening two sets.
