Sixth-seeded Leylah Fernandez of Canada defeated top seed Mirra Andreeva 6-2, 7-5 in the quarter-finals of the Singapore Tennis Open on Friday to reach the last four.
Fernandez converted six of 11 break points during the 92-minute match, including the decisive game, to set up a semi-final against Poland’s fifth seed Maja Chwalinska.
Chwalinska advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over fourth seed Elise Mertens of Belgium in 89 minutes.
The other semi-final will feature unseeded Russian Tatiana Prozorova and Australia’s Talia Gibson.
Prozorova recovered to beat China’s Xinyu Wang 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in just over three hours, while Gibson defeated seventh seed Maria Sakkari of Greece 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in just under two hours.
Korea Open
Rain disrupted the quarter-finals in Seoul, with all four matches postponed until Saturday.
Second seed Kimberly Birrell of Australia was leading Katie Volynets 2-6, 6-2, 4-2 when play was suspended.
Third seed Lanlana Tararudee of Thailand will face fifth seed Maya Joint of Australia, while fourth seed Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania takes on sixth seed Anna Bondar of Hungary.
Australia’s Taylah Preston will meet Russia’s Alina Korneeva in the remaining quarter-final.
Billie Jean King Cup
The Czech Republic became the first team to reach the Billie Jean King Cup final after Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova won their singles matches against Spain in Shenzhen, China.
Muchova beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 7-5, 6-4 before Noskova defeated Cristina Bucsa 7-6(5), 6-2, making the doubles rubber unnecessary.
Noskova hit seven aces in her victory, with the Czech team advancing without dropping a singles match.
The Czech Republic will face either Ukraine or defending champions Italy in Sunday’s final. Ukraine and Italy meet in the other semi-final on Saturday.
