MIRPUR : Jomel Warrican claimed five wickets as West Indies bowled out Bangladesh for 272 before reaching 134-4 on a rain-affected second day of the Test in Mirpur on Thursday.
The visitors trailed by 138 runs at stumps, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul unbeaten on 43 and Justin Greaves on 15 after rain and bad light forced an early finish.
Bangladesh resumed on 213-3 but suffered a dramatic collapse, losing seven wickets for just 59 runs in the morning session.
Left-arm spinner Warrican finished with figures of 5-53, while debutant Joshua Bishop also played a key role in dismantling the hosts’ batting lineup.
Shadman Islam completed his third Test century before falling to Bishop, while Bangladesh lost their final five wickets for only 19 runs.
West Indies made a promising start in reply, with John Campbell scoring a half-century and sharing a 61-run second-wicket partnership with Chanderpaul.
However, Bangladesh fought back after a rain interruption as Mehidy Hasan Miraz dismissed Campbell, thanks to a spectacular slip catch by captain Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam then struck twice in the same over, removing Kavem Hodge and Amir Jangoo as West Indies slipped from 90-1 to 97-4.
Chanderpaul and Greaves steadied the innings with an unbeaten 37-run partnership before play was abandoned for the day.
Despite Bangladesh’s late recovery, West Indies remained in a strong position after their bowlers restricted the hosts to a modest first-innings total.
