Doha: The Turkish Football Federation Board of Directors decided today, in the meeting it held, to appoint Sergen Yalçın to the position of head coach of our National Team. A four-year contract will be signed with the 53-year-old coach and his staff.
Born in Istanbul on November 5, 1972, Sergen Yalçın turned professional at Beşiktaş, where he began his football career in the youth academy. Yalçın, who stood out among Turkish football’s prominent talents with his performance at the black-and-white club, also wore the jerseys of İstanbulspor, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Trabzonspor throughout his playing career. He earned the distinction of being the first footballer to play for Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Trabzonspor clubs.
Spending the final years of his career at Etimesgut Şekerspor and Eskişehirspor, Yalçın celebrated four league titles and two Turkish Cup wins with Beşiktaş during his playing days. He also secured two league titles and one Turkish Cup with Galatasaray.
Part of our U-21 National Team squad that won the gold at the 1993 Mediterranean Games, Sergen Yalçın made his senior National Team debut on August 31, 1994. Having earned 37 caps and scoring five goals, Yalçın also featured in the 1996 and 2000 European Championships.
Following the successes he achieved as a player, Sergen Yalçın continued to serve Turkish football as a coach, building on his coaching career that began in Beşiktaş’s youth academy with stints at Gaziantepspor (twice), Sivasspor, Kayserispor, Eskişehirspor, Konyaspor, Alanyaspor, Yeni Malatyaspor, Beşiktaş (twice), and Antalyaspor. In the 2020/21 season, Yalçın led Beşiktaş—his first time managing the club—to both Süper Lig and Turkish Cup titles. With this achievement, he became the first and only figure in Beşiktaş history to win the Süper Lig as both a player and a head coach.
