Tottenham Hotspur have signed Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool, the Premier League club said on Friday.
The 32-year-old left Liverpool at the end of his contract after nine highly successful seasons at Anfield, during which he won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Champions League in 2019.
Robertson announced in April that he would leave Liverpool, and Tottenham moved quickly to secure the experienced left back as they look to strengthen a squad that narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season.
“Andy is someone I’ve admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi said in a statement.
“He is a proven winner at the highest level and someone who can be a big player for us both on and off the pitch.”
Widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest full backs, Robertson became a key figure under former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, combining relentless energy with attacking quality from the left flank.
He leaves Anfield having scored 14 goals and registered 69 assists across all competitions.
Sporting director Johan Lange hailed Robertson’s arrival as a major addition for Spurs.
“He is an outstanding left back and someone who will improve our squad immediately,” Lange said. “His quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career filled with major honours.”
Robertson is expected to join up with his new club following the World Cup, where he will captain Scotland in the tournament being held across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
