Seattle, Washington : The expansion Toronto Tempo have made a major statement by signing guards Marina Mabrey and Brittney Sykes to two-year max contracts, forming the league’s first known $1 million backcourt pairing.
Mabrey, 29, is set to earn a reported $1.2 million per season after being selected sixth overall in the expansion draft from the Connecticut Sun. She averaged 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists last season, continuing her rise as a reliable offensive contributor.
Sykes, 32, joins as a free agent after an All-Star campaign in 2025 split between the Washington Mystics and Seattle Storm. Known for her defensive excellence, she is a four-time All-Defensive team selection and averaged 14.1 points, 4.0 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season.
Toronto also strengthened its roster by signing Julie Allemand, the No. 2 overall pick in the expansion draft, who arrives from the Los Angeles Sparks. The Belgian guard averaged 5.4 points and 5.0 assists last season and is expected to add leadership and playmaking depth.
General manager Monica Wright Rogers praised the trio, highlighting their competitiveness, versatility and experience as key building blocks for the franchise’s future.
