DARWIN : Opener Tanzid Hasan scored his maiden Test century as Bangladesh built an 88-run first-innings lead over Australia on day two of the series opener in Darwin on Friday.
Bangladesh reached 286-3 at tea at Marrara Oval, having resumed on 96-1 after dismissing Australia for 198 on the opening day.
Tanzid, playing only his second Test, became the first Bangladesh batter to score a century in Australia after making 101 from 197 balls. He was eventually dismissed attempting to slog spinner Nathan Lyon, with Mitchell Starc running in from long-off to take the catch.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was unbeaten on 79, while Mushfiqur Rahim was 26 not out at the interval.
Tanzid and Shanto had combined to keep Bangladesh firmly in control after Australia’s pace attack struggled to make further inroads on a sweltering afternoon.
Josh Hazlewood claimed Australia’s only wicket of the first session when he had Mominul Haque caught behind for 49, denying the left-hander a half-century.
Bangladesh had earlier been inspired by Hasan Mahmud’s 6-55 as Australia were bowled out for their lowest Test total against the South Asian side.
The visitors are playing their first Test series in Australia in 23 years. The second and final Test will be played in Mackay, Queensland, from Aug. 22.
