ZURICH : Switzerland coach Murat Yakin named an experienced 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Tuesday, with captain Granit Xhaka leading the team into the tournament in North America.
Switzerland open their Group B campaign against Qatar national football team in San Francisco on June 13 before facing Canada national football team in Vancouver on June 18 and Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team in Seattle on June 24.
Among the key players selected were defender Manuel Akanji, midfielder Denis Zakaria and striker Breel Embolo, while goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is expected to play a leading role.
Switzerland will be appearing in a seventh successive World Cup since 2006 and have reached the last 16 in each of the previous three tournaments.
Their most recent World Cup campaign ended in the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 following a heavy defeat by Portugal national football team.
