BAKU : Mercedes driver George Russell said he is confident he can fight for victory at every Formula One race after returning to form with a win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday.
Russell completed a grand slam in Baku, starting from pole position, leading every lap, setting the fastest lap and taking the chequered flag.
The Briton described it as the most “dominant weekend I’ve had in my career” and said he never lost faith in his ability despite a difficult first half of the season.
“I think I never lost that faith in myself,” Russell said.
He also held off a late challenge from Max Verstappen during the closing stages of the race.
Russell’s performance in Baku was a marked change from earlier in the season, when he was regularly outperformed by his 20-year-old Mercedes team mate Kimi Antonelli, who leads the championship
Antonelli has won eight races this season compared with Russell’s three, but Russell said changes to his driving style during the summer break had helped him adapt to the 2026 cars.
“Even through the tough moments I knew there was a reason why I was off the pace,” he said.
Russell has finished on the front row in three of the four races since the break and has three podiums in that period.
“I feel I can fight for victory week-in, week-out now,” Russell said, as he looks to maintain his improved form in the remaining races of the season.
