MADRID : Real Madrid secured a 2-1 win over Deportivo Alaves on Tuesday to remain second in La Liga.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the 30th minute before Vinicius Junior doubled the lead early in the second half. Antonio Martinez pulled one back for Alaves in stoppage time.
The result moves Real Madrid to 73 points, while Mbappe leads the league scoring charts with 24 goals. Alaves remain 17th on 33 points.
Elsewhere, Real Betis beat Girona 3-2, with goals from Marc Roca, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli and Rodrigo Riquelme. Girona responded through Viktor Tsyhankov and Azzedine Ounahi.
Betis climbed to fifth place with 49 points, while Girona sit 11th on 38.
Athletic Bilbao edged Osasuna 1-0 thanks to a 16th-minute goal from Gorka Guruzeta, moving up to ninth with 41 points.
Valencia drew 1-1 with Mallorca, leaving the sides 13th and 14th respectively.
Leaders Barcelona sit on 79 points and can extend their advantage over Real Madrid to nine points if they beat Celta Vigo on Wednesday.
