WASHINGTON : Persistent rain forced the suspension of the Washington Open women’s singles final between Jessica Pegula and Alexandra Eala on Sunday, while the men’s final was also postponed as bad weather disrupted play across North America’s hardcourt swing.
After a delay of more than three hours, top seed Pegula took the opening set 6-4 before the Philippines’ Eala moved 2-1 ahead in the second set when rain halted play.
Tournament organisers later postponed the remainder of the day’s schedule, with both singles finals rescheduled for Monday.
“Matches have been cancelled for tonight. The women’s singles final will now take place at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow. The men’s singles final will take place not before 1:00 p.m. tomorrow,” organisers said on social media.
The men’s title match between American Taylor Fritz and Spain’s Rafael Jodar will also be played on Monday.
Wet weather also affected the Canadian Open, which is being held from Aug. 1-14, with the women’s tournament in Toronto and the men’s event in Montreal.
In Toronto, play on the Grandstand court was suspended during the match between Poland’s Magdalena Frech and France’s Leolia Jeanjean before organisers called off the remainder of the day’s play.
“All matches have been cancelled for tonight. Sunny skies in our future. Action resumes tomorrow,” tournament organisers said.
In Montreal, rain first delayed the daytime schedule before forcing the cancellation of the entire night session.
