DOHA :  Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, president of the Qatar Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia, honoured Team Qatar athletes and national teams on Friday following the country’s record performance at the fourth GCC Games Doha 2026.

The ceremony was attended by Mohammed bin Yousuf Al Mana, first vice-president of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, second vice-president of the committee, and Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, secretary-general of the Qatar Olympic Committee and vice chairman of the organising committee for the Games.

Sheikh Joaan said Team Qatar’s achievement at the regional event was a source of pride for the country after the hosts finished top of the medal standings with 134 medals, including 48 gold and 50 silver.

“Everyone is proud and delighted with what Team Qatar athletes have achieved,” Sheikh Joaan said.

“This is a significant achievement that reflects the tremendous effort and hard work invested, especially in light of the strong participation and fierce competition from our fellow GCC teams.”

He added that the Games provided important preparation ahead of the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya and stressed the need for continued work and focus as many athletes prepare for their first appearance at the continental event.

Sheikh Joaan also highlighted the importance of experienced athletes in guiding younger competitors and strengthening the culture of responsibility within the national teams.

“What matters now is to continue working hard and striving to be fully prepared for the upcoming challenges,” he said.

He concluded by thanking the athletes along with the technical and administrative staff for their efforts throughout the Games and expressed confidence in their ability to continue achieving success for Qatar at future competitions.
