DOHA: Qatar’s national tent pegging team qualified for the World Cup Finals in Jordan next month after finishing top of a three-day qualifying tournament in Oman.
The Qatari riders produced consistent performances throughout the competition to finish with 414.50 points, edging Iraq by just 1.50 points in a closely contested battle for first place. Kuwait finished third.
Qatar’s success was highlighted by impressive individual performances on the final day, with Nasser Hamad Mubarak Al Hajri winning the gold medal and compatriot Ibrahim Jassim Al Hammadi claiming silver.
The result secured Qatar a place at the World Cup Finals, scheduled to take place in Jordan from Nov. 11 to 14.
Qatar had earlier advanced to the playoffs after finishing third in Group C of the qualifying competition held in Oman last September.
Pakistan topped that group, while hosts Oman finished second, with both teams securing direct qualification for the finals.
The six-team group also featured the United States, Iran and Uzbekistan, with teams competing for two automatic qualification places.
Qatar’s latest achievement marks a successful turnaround after missing out on direct qualification, with the team delivering a strong performance in the playoffs to secure its place among the finalists at the international event.
