AICHI-NAGOYA, Japan — Qatar opened their men’s basketball campaign at the 20th Asian Games with a 59-53 victory over Iran on Thursday.
The win gave Qatar an early lead in Group B, which also includes Jordan and Chinese Taipei.
Qatar will face Jordan in their second group match on Saturday before completing the preliminary round against Chinese Taipei on Sunday.
The men’s basketball tournament features 12 teams divided into three groups. Group A comprises hosts Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, while Group C includes China, the Philippines, Bahrain and Kazakhstan.
The group stage will be followed by the knockout rounds, culminating in the final on Sept. 20.
The Asian Games officially open in Japan on Sept. 19 and run through Oct. 4.
Qatar are represented by 243 athletes at the Games, including 184 men and 59 women, from 18 sports federations.
The delegation is targeting strong results across the competition as Qatar seeks to strengthen its presence on the Asian sporting stage.
