DOHA: Qatar’s men’s national basketball team has been drawn in Group B alongside Iran, Jordan and Chinese Taipei for the 20th Asian Games “Aichi–Nagoya 2026” in Japan.
The tournament will feature 12 teams divided into three groups of four. Group A comprises Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia, while Group C includes China, the Philippines, Bahrain and Kazakhstan.
Qatar will begin its campaign against Iran, followed by matches against Jordan and Chinese Taipei in the preliminary round. The knockout stage will then begin with the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals and medal matches. Qatar enters the competition with a proud basketball history.
The national 5×5 team made history by qualifying for the FIBA Basketball World Cup for the first time in 2006, when Japan hosted the tournament.
On the continental stage, Qatar won FIBA Asia Cup bronze medals in 2003 and 2005, establishing itself among Asia’s leading basketball nations.
The team also claimed the Asian Challenge Cup title in 2004. Regionally, Qatar has enjoyed continued success through appearances in the Gulf Championship and West Asia Championship, winning several titles along the way.
The Asian Games will provide another major opportunity for Qatar’s basketball team to showcase its talent on the continental stage and build on its proud history.
