GANDHINAGAR , India : Qatar has won the bid to host the electoral general assembly of the Asian Weightlifting Federation in December following a vote during the federation’s executive board meeting held alongside the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2026 in India.
Qatar’s bid defeated Singapore after Iran and Maldives withdrew from the contest.
The assembly will be staged in conjunction with the Qatar International Weightlifting Cup from Dec. 7-17, which will serve as a qualifying event for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Mohammed Yousef Al Mana, first vice president of the Qatar Olympic Committee, said the successful bid reflected the confidence Asian sports bodies have in Qatar’s organisational capabilities and hosting standards.
He added that holding the electoral congress alongside an Olympic qualifying competition would represent an important step in the development of weightlifting across Asia and further strengthen Qatar’s position as a destination for major international sporting events.
