AUCKLAND : Glenn Phillips smashed a blistering century and Jacob Duffy claimed four wickets as New Zealand defeated India by 87 runs in the fourth Twenty20 international in Auckland on Friday, reducing the deficit in the five-match series to 3-1.
Phillips struck a sensational 107 off just 49 balls to power New Zealand to an imposing 259-7, the highest total ever posted against India in men’s T20 internationals.
The explosive batter dominated India’s bowling attack with an aggressive display, helping the hosts set a daunting target of 260.
Mayank Yadav was India’s most successful bowler with figures of 3-48, while Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy claimed one wicket each.
India’s chase got off to a disastrous start as Duffy struck twice in the opening over, removing Sanju Samson for four and Ishan Kishan for a duck.
The visitors attempted to rebuild their innings, but Duffy returned to dismiss Naman Dhir for 28 and Arshdeep Singh for a duck off successive deliveries, effectively ending India’s hopes of another successful run chase.
Duffy finished with impressive figures of 4-23 as New Zealand secured a convincing victory.
Despite the defeat, India retain an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series, having already clinched the trophy with victories in the opening three matches.
