Lucknow, India : India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has stepped down as captain of the Lucknow Super Giants after the franchise finished bottom of the Indian Premier League standings for the first time, the team said on Friday.
Pant, who was bought by Lucknow for a tournament-record $3.21 million ahead of the 2025 season, had been appointed captain in January.
The 28-year-old endured an inconsistent campaign with both bat and leadership as Lucknow managed only four wins from 14 matches and failed to qualify for the playoffs for a third successive season.
Lucknow said Pant had approached the franchise requesting to be relieved of captaincy duties and the management had accepted his decision.
“These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain,” Lucknow director of cricket Tom Moody said in a statement.
“Our focus now is on the collective, rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards.”
