ISLAMABAD : Pakistan have appointed former South Africa first-class cricketer Michael Smith as batting coach of the men’s team across all formats on a two-year contract, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Tuesday.
The 46-year-old will join the squad ahead of Pakistan’s three-test series against England, which begins in Leeds on Aug. 19.
Smith enjoyed a decade-long domestic playing career in South Africa between 2003 and 2013, featuring in 89 first-class matches, 72 List A games and 16 Twenty20 fixtures before moving into coaching.
He is no stranger to Pakistan cricket, having previously served on the coaching staffs of Pakistan Super League franchises Islamabad United, Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans.
Smith has also held coaching roles in Australia with the Hobart Hurricanes and Cricket Tasmania, while working as a batting consultant with South African domestic teams KZN Inland and Eastern Province.
His appointment comes as Pakistan prepare for a busy international schedule, beginning with the three-test series in England before a five-match one-day international series.
