PARIS : Former world number six Gael Monfils has retired from professional tennis at the age of 40, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed on Wednesday.
Monfils’ retirement removes him from the sport’s anti-doping testing pool and makes him ineligible to enter tournaments, an ITIA spokesperson told Reuters. The Frenchman has also been added to the agency’s official list of retired players.
Monfils announced in October 2025 that he would end his career after the 2026 season and had been expected to make his final appearance at the Paris Masters in November.
One of the most charismatic players of his generation, Monfils was renowned for his athleticism, flair and entertaining style, which made him a crowd favourite throughout his career.
He won 13 ATP Tour singles titles, claiming his first in Poland in 2005 and his most recent in Auckland in January 2025.
His best performances at Grand Slam tournaments were semi-final appearances at the French Open in 2008 and the U.S. Open in 2016.
Monfils’ final Grand Slam appearance came at this year’s U.S. Open, where he lost to American Learner Tien in the second round.
