Third seed Elise Mertens suffered a surprise straight-sets defeat at the Libema Open on Thursday as Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse advanced to the quarter-finals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
Ruse saved eight of the nine break points she faced and produced a clinical performance to beat the Belgian 6-3, 6-3.
Eighth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova was the only seeded player to progress on Thursday, defeating Belgium’s Hanne Vandewinkel 6-1, 6-4.
Fifth seed Anastasia Potapova retired due to illness while trailing Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez 6-1, 2-0.
American Robin Montgomery, ranked No. 484 in the world, continued her impressive run by defeating Belgium’s Greet Minnen 6-4, 7-6(4). Montgomery won nearly 74% of her first-service points to secure a place in the last eight.
Poland’s Magda Linette and Ukraine’s Daria Snigur also advanced to the quarter-finals.
Rain Washes Out Play in London
At the HSBC Championships in London, all scheduled matches at the WTA 500 event were postponed due to rain.
Top seed Elena Rybakina will resume her Round of 16 match against Germany’s Tatjana Maria on Friday.
Friday’s revised schedule also includes an all-American quarter-final between second seed Amanda Anisimova and sixth seed Iva Jovic.
