MADRID: Kylian Mbappe has suffered a hamstring injury, his club Real Madrid said on Monday, dealing a blow weeks before the start of the World Cup.
The France captain sustained the injury during Real’s 1-1 LaLiga draw at Real Betis on Friday, with Spanish media reporting the 27-year-old could miss the remainder of the season.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to the semitendinosus muscle in his left leg. Awaiting progress,” the club said in a statement.
Real Madrid travel to Espanyol on Sunday before visiting Barcelona on May 10.
The 15-times European champions are enduring a disappointing campaign, sitting 11 points behind Barcelona after 33 LaLiga matches and having been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Bayern Munich.
The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, is set to begin on June 11.
