TOKYO : Japan national football team wrapped up their home preparations for the World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Iceland national football team on Sunday, as Koki Ogawa scored a late winner in Tokyo.
Ogawa headed home in the 87th minute, converting a cross from Yukinari Sugawara, to secure victory for coach Hajime Moriyasu after a largely unconvincing display by the hosts.
The match also served as a farewell appearance for veteran defender Maya Yoshida, who made his first international appearance in almost four years. The 37-year-old was substituted in the 13th minute and received a guard of honour from teammates before handing the captain’s armband to Wataru Endo.
Japan’s starting lineup featured the return of Takehiro Tomiyasu, making his first appearance for the national team in nearly two years as he continues his recovery and build-up toward the World Cup.
The hosts created the better opportunities but struggled to break down Iceland’s defence. Keito Nakamura and Takefusa Kubo both tested goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson, while Iceland threatened through Logi Tomasson and Dagur Dan Thorhallsson.
With the match seemingly headed for a draw, Ogawa rose to meet Sugawara’s delivery and guided his header beyond Valdimarsson via the inside of the post.
Japan will be making their eighth consecutive World Cup appearance and begin their campaign against the Netherlands national football team on June 14. They will also face the Tunisia national football team and the Sweden national football team in the group stage.
