MADRID : Marta Kostyuk produced a powerful display to defeat Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 and claim the Madrid Open title on Saturday.
The victory, sealed in one hour and 20 minutes, marks only the third singles title of Kostyuk’s career and her first at WTA 1000 level, adding to previous triumphs in Austin Open (2023) and Rouen Open earlier this year.
Kostyuk set the tone early with aggressive baseline play, stepping inside the court and dictating rallies. She broke decisively in the sixth game of the opening set to take control and, despite a brief wobble while serving for the set, closed it out with authority.
“It feels unbelievable to be standing here right now,” Kostyuk said. “I can only thank my team for supporting me throughout the years.”
Andreeva, who recently turned 19 and is among the brightest young talents on tour, showed resilience in a fluctuating second set. She briefly seized momentum by moving ahead 3-1, but Kostyuk responded strongly to level at 3-3.
The closing stages turned into a tense battle, with Andreeva missing key opportunities at 5-4, including a set point. Kostyuk held firm under pressure, firing consecutive aces before breaking in the next game after a costly double fault from her opponent.
Serving for the championship, the Ukrainian showed no signs of nerves, sealing victory to cap a commanding run in Madrid.
The triumph underlines Kostyuk’s growing stature on the tour, combining power and composure to secure the biggest title of her career.
