AUCKLAND : Virat Kohli became the first batter in cricket history to score 13,000 runs in one-day internationals while batting at number three as India took control of their opening ODI against New Zealand before rain interrupted play at Eden Park on Wednesday.
Chasing a target of 186, India were 54 for one after 10.5 overs, comfortably ahead of the required rate. Kohli was unbeaten on 29 off 27 balls, while captain Shubman Gill was 17 not out from 32 deliveries.
Kohli reached the milestone during his innings, adding another landmark to his remarkable ODI career.
Earlier, India bowled out New Zealand for 185 in 40.2 overs, with Arshdeep Singh claiming four wickets and Gurnoor Brar taking three.
Rain interrupted India’s chase, with the pitch remaining under covers as light drizzle continued around the ground.
The interruption made a full 50-over contest unlikely, with the match dependent on weather conditions and the possibility of a revised target under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
