INGLEWOOD, California : Iran left a handwritten message thanking Los Angeles for its hospitality after Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Belgium, a result that kept their World Cup qualification hopes alive amid the logistical challenges the team has faced during the tournament.
The note, released by Iran’s football federation, was left in the team’s locker room at SoFi Stadium following their second Group G match in the city.
Los Angeles has hosted both of Iran’s group-stage fixtures so far, with the team travelling back and forth from its tournament base in Tijuana, Mexico, between matches.
Iran have been operating under travel restrictions during the World Cup, with some team officials and staff unable to enter the United States. U.S. authorities have said the arrangements remain under review while discussions continue regarding potential adjustments.
“From the ancient Persia of thousands of years ago to the civilized Iran of today, the spirit of Iran remains alive and steadfast,” the note read.
“Thank you Los Angeles for your hospitality.
“We came to Los Angeles with pride, competed with honour, and leave with dignity.”
The message also thanked Iranian supporters for giving their “heart, voice and soul” to the team during the two matches and concluded with a call for peace, friendship and mutual respect among nations.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei has repeatedly spoken about the difficulties created by the team’s travel arrangements, arguing that his players have had to cope with circumstances unlike those faced by any other side in the tournament.
Despite those challenges, Iran remain in contention for a place in the knockout rounds after opening the competition with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand before holding Belgium scoreless on Sunday.
The Iranians will conclude their Group G campaign against Egypt in Seattle, with qualification still firmly within reach.
