The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended Cricket Canada with immediate effect over serious breaches of its membership obligations, while allowing Canadian national teams to continue competing in international events.
The decision comes weeks after the ICC’s anti-corruption unit launched an investigation into Cricket Canada following allegations of corruption and governance failures.
A documentary broadcast in April by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation alleged corruption within Cricket Canada’s administration, including claims of match manipulation and threats of violence involving players and officials. Media reports said the ICC’s anti-corruption probe was initiated shortly afterward.
Following a board meeting in Ahmedabad, India, the ICC said Cricket Canada had been suspended due to “serious breaches” of its membership requirements.
Despite the suspension, Canada’s national teams will remain eligible to participate in ICC tournaments. Funding required for team operations will continue through a controlled mechanism overseen by the governing body.
The ICC said Cricket Canada must meet a series of conditions designed to address governance and administrative shortcomings before its membership can be restored.
“The progress against these conditions will be monitored by the ICC normalisation committee, supported by ICC management, with reinstatement of membership subject to the board being satisfied that the conditions have been fully met,” the ICC said in a statement.
The move mirrors action taken against USA Cricket in 2025, when the U.S. governing body was suspended for membership-rule violations. The suspension did not affect participation by U.S. national teams, which remain eligible for ICC competitions and are expected to compete when cricket returns to the Olympic programme at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
