SPANISH GRAND PRIX AND MADRING
The last time Formula One raced near Madrid was in 1981 at Jarama, about 30 km north of the Spanish capital.
Madring has 22 turns, including 10 left-handers and 12 right-handers. Its standout feature is Turn 12, known as “La Monumental”, a sweeping 550-metre semi-circular corner with banking of up to 24%.
It is the longest banked corner on the Formula One calendar and is expected to generate the highest vertical load of the season on the tyres.
The circuit, which winds around the IFEMA exhibition centre near Barajas airport, has a 10-year agreement to host Formula One.
The opening sector is very fast, while the middle section features several medium- and low-speed corners. The final sector includes a series of 90-degree turns.
The newly laid asphalt is expected to be smooth with relatively low grip. It has been treated with high-pressure water jets to remove dust and oily residues.
Madring becomes the sixth circuit to host the Spanish Grand Prix, following Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Montjuic, Pedralbes, Jarama and Jerez.
CHAMPIONSHIP
Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli leads teammate George Russell by 66 points after winning his home Italian Grand Prix at Monza last Sunday.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton is third, 76 points behind Antonelli, while reigning champion Lando Norris of McLaren is a further 20 points adrift.
Mercedes lead Ferrari by 122 points in the constructors’ championship.
RACE WINS
Antonelli has won seven races this season, including five in succession. Russell and Norris have two wins each, while Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc have one apiece.
No other Italian driver has won seven races in a single Formula One season.
Hamilton ended a winless run dating back to 2024 with victory in Barcelona, while Leclerc won in Britain. Russell triumphed in Australia and Austria.
Antonelli won in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco, Belgium and Italy, while Norris won in Hungary and the Netherlands.
Mercedes have won nine of the 13 races so far, including the first six.
Hamilton has a record 106 career victories from 393 starts with three teams.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has 71 grand prix wins and is third on the all-time list behind Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, who has 91.
POLE POSITION
Mercedes have taken pole in all but three grands prix this season. Russell has started from pole in Australia, Canada, Barcelona and Austria, while Antonelli did so in China, Japan, Miami, Monaco, Britain and Belgium.
Norris took pole in Hungary and the Netherlands, while Alpine’s Pierre Gasly was fastest in qualifying in Italy.
Hamilton holds the record with 104 career pole positions, the most recent coming in Hungary in 2023.
MILESTONE
Madring will become the 78th circuit to host a Formula One race since the championship began in 1950.
