LONDON :  Matthew Fisher produced a stubborn unbeaten half-century to frustrate New Zealand and help England recover from a batting collapse before being bowled out for 291 at lunch on the third day of the second test on Friday.

England, replying to New Zealand’s first-innings total of 391, trailed by 100 runs after Fisher’s resistance and a valuable last-wicket partnership with debutant Sonny Baker prevented the visitors from wrapping up the innings quickly.

Resuming on 226-6, England’s hopes of reducing the deficit suffered an early setback as seamer Matthew Henry ripped through the lower order.

Henry dismissed Jordan Cox, Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue in quick succession to complete a five-wicket haul and leave England struggling at 238-9.

With New Zealand poised to secure a substantial lead, Fisher dug in and shared a determined last-wicket stand with Baker, frustrating the visitors’ attack and taking England closer to the 300-mark.

The right-hander played with composure and restraint to reach an unbeaten 50 from 76 balls, registering the first half-century of his test career.

Baker, making his debut, contributed four runs before becoming the final wicket to fall shortly before the lunch interval.

New Zealand will begin their second innings with a 100-run lead as they seek to level the three-match series, with England holding a 1-0 advantage after winning the opening test.
