KANSAS CITY, Missouri : Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a record-setting performance to secure his country’s first-ever World Cup point on Saturday, making 15 saves in a 0-0 draw with Ecuador and delivering one of the greatest goalkeeping displays in tournament history.
Room was called into action within two minutes at Children’s Mercy Park, denying Ecuador captain Enner Valencia from close range, and the 37-year-old never stopped frustrating the South Americans as Curacao withstood wave after wave of pressure in Group E.
The draw earned the smallest nation ever to compete at a World Cup, with a population of about 156,000, a historic first point on football’s biggest stage.
Room’s 15 saves set a World Cup record for a goalkeeper in a regulation-time match. Only the United States’ Tim Howard has made more in a World Cup game, producing 16 stops against Belgium after extra time in the round of 16 in 2014.
“I wasn’t thinking about that during the game,” Room told reporters, though he joked afterward that he was disappointed not to match Howard’s mark.
The veteran goalkeeper repeatedly rescued Curacao, including a diving stop from a John Yeboah strike from 18 metres in the 41st minute and a crucial second-half save from a Valencia header.
Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez acknowledged the scale of the performance, saying Room had played the game of his life.
Curacao joined fellow tournament debutants Cape Verde in relying on goalkeeping heroics after Vozinha helped the African side earn a surprise 0-0 draw against Spain in Group H earlier in the tournament.
A DREAM REALISED
For Room, the result represented the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition.
Born in the Netherlands, he became eligible to represent Curacao through his father and chose to switch allegiance after being approached by former Netherlands striker Patrick Kluivert, who managed the Caribbean side in 2015.
Room told FIFA earlier this year that his childhood dream was to help Curacao reach the World Cup.
He had already become a national hero in 2019 when he made more than a dozen saves during Curacao’s first Gold Cup victory against Honduras, but his display against Ecuador eclipsed that achievement.
The impact was immediate beyond the pitch. Room’s Instagram following reportedly surged from fewer than 100,000 before kickoff to around 700,000 after the match, mirroring the social media rise enjoyed by Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha earlier in the tournament.
The six-foot-three goalkeeper currently plays for Miami FC in the USL Championship and has previously represented Dutch club Vitesse, PSV Eindhoven and Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew.
ROYAL CELEBRATION
Curacao’s historic night was witnessed by Dutch royalty, with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima attending the match in Kansas City.
According to Room, the royal couple joined in the celebrations after the final whistle, dancing with players, while the queen even kissed him during the post-match festivities.
As Curacao’s players celebrated on the pitch, the significance of the moment was not lost on those following from home.
“Curacao! We got a point! This is history!” shouted a journalist from the Caribbean nation from the press box after the final whistle.
Head coach Dick Advocaat had joked before the match that his team might need Ecuador reduced by four players to have a chance of winning.
Instead, Curacao needed only one man.
His name was Eloy Room.
