F1 Set to Return to V8 Engines by 2031, Says FIA President

MIAMI :  Formula One is poised to reintroduce V8 engines by 2031, with a possible early switch in 2030, according to Mohammed Ben Sulayem, head of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.

Speaking at the Miami Grand Prix, Ben Sulayem confirmed that the move is inevitable, citing a desire to simplify the sport and enhance fan appeal.

“It’s coming. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of time,” he said.

Under current regulations, the FIA can enforce the switch in 2031 without requiring approval from power unit manufacturers. However, an earlier transition in 2030 remains possible if at least four of the six engine suppliers agree.

The current V6 hybrid era—introduced with a roughly 50-50 split between electric and combustion power and fully sustainable fuels—has drawn criticism from drivers and fans alike. Complaints have focused on complexity, reduced engine sound, and racing limitations such as “lift and coast” techniques to conserve energy.

Ben Sulayem emphasized that the shift to V8 engines would address these concerns by offering:

  • Simpler technology
  • Reduced costs
  • Lighter power units
  • A more engaging engine sound

Formula One last used V8 engines between 2006 and 2013, before transitioning to the quieter 1.6-litre V6 turbo-hybrid systems.

While alternatives like V10 engines were considered, Ben Sulayem noted that V8s remain the most practical and widely supported option, particularly due to their relevance in road car development.

Despite ongoing discussions with manufacturers—including Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull-Ford, Honda, Audi, and General Motors—the FIA president made it clear the transition is ultimately unavoidable.

“If not 2030, then 2031. It will happen,” he said.
