DOHA : Qatar will host the 10th FISU World University Weightlifting Championships from Sept. 8-12, bringing 116 athletes from 21 countries to Doha for the five-day competition.
The championships are being organised by the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation (QCSF) under the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and will be held at the Education City Student Center Multi-Purpose Hall.
A total of 16 weight classes, comprising eight men’s and eight women’s categories, will feature athletes competing for the world university titles.
The event marks the return of the championships after the previous edition was held in 2018. The competition was subsequently suspended as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the international sporting calendar.
Several participants compete for their national teams at continental and world championships, highlighting the level of experience in the field.
The championships will be the second global event organised by the QCSF since its establishment in 2023, following its hosting of the FISU University World Cup 3×3 Basketball.
The organising committee will hold a press conference on Sept. 6 to provide technical and organisational updates, with QCSF and FISU officials as well as sustainability and sponsorship partners expected to attend.
The official opening ceremony is scheduled for the evening of Sept. 8, before competition begins.
Organisers said preparations were being made to provide athletes and delegations with facilities meeting international standards, while the detailed competition schedule and related activities will be announced ahead of the championships.
