DOHA : Qatar is ready to host the 10th FISU World University Weightlifting Championship in Doha from Sept. 8-12, with about 116 athletes from 21 countries set to compete, organisers said on Sunday.
The announcement was made at a press conference at Multaqa, the Education City Student Center, attended by Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation (QCSF) President and Organizing Committee Chairman Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi, QCSF Secretary-General and committee Vice Chairman Rashid Saeed Adiba, and FISU Executive Committee member Marko Zunic.
Al Nuaimi said hosting the championship reflected Qatar’s commitment to university sport and its growing presence on the international stage. He also welcomed the participating delegations and highlighted the role of fair play, communication and friendship among athletes from different cultures.
Adiba said Doha was fully prepared to host the event, with organisers working through an integrated system designed to meet international standards and provide athletes and delegations with a high-quality competition environment.
The championship will be held at Multaqa, while training sessions will take place at the Ezdan Palace Hotel.
The participating countries are Qatar, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, Spain, Finland, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Iraq, Korea, Moldova, Poland, Puerto Rico, Romania, Sri Lanka, Slovakia, Chinese Taipei and the United States.
The competition will feature eight men’s categories, ranging from 60kg to over 110kg, and eight women’s categories, from 49kg to over 86kg. Athletes will compete in the Snatch and Clean & Jerk events.
Organisers said the championship marks the QCSF’s second world event since its launch in 2023, following its hosting of the FISU University World Cup 3×3 Basketball.
The event also marks the return of the university weightlifting championship to the international calendar after a hiatus since 2018.
The championship mascot, Rimal, reflects Qatar’s environment and heritage, while its visual identity draws on the values of strength, balance and excellence associated with weightlifting.
