KARACHI: Sarfaraz Ahmed has been appointed head coach of Pakistan’s Test side for next month’s two-match series in Bangladesh, the country’s cricket board said on Saturday.
The former captain replaces Jason Gillespie, who stepped down as red-ball coach in December, with Aaqib Javed and Azhar Mahmood having overseen the team on an interim basis.
Shan Masood will continue to lead the side in Bangladesh.
Sarfaraz, who captained Pakistan to the 2017 Champions Trophy title, has previously worked with the under-19 team and Pakistan Shaheens following his retirement.
Pakistan have included four uncapped players — Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Azan Awais and Muhammad Ghazi Ghori — in their 16-member squad for the series, which begins in Dhaka on May 8.
Former fast bowler Umar Gul will serve as bowling coach.
Squad: Shan Masood (captain), Abdullah Fazal, Amad Butt, Azan Awais, Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Khurram Shahzad, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeeper), Muhammad Ghazi Ghori (wicketkeeper), Noman Ali, Sajid Khan, Salman Agha, Saud Shakeel and Shaheen Afridi.
