Sir Garry Sobers, widely regarded as the greatest all-round cricketer in history, has died at the age of 89, Cricket West Indies said on Friday.

No cause of death was given.

A gifted left-handed batter, left-arm bowler capable of both pace and spin, and exceptional fielder, Sobers was named one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the 20th Century and was hailed by Australian great Don Bradman as the finest all-rounder he had ever seen.

“I’ve got no hesitation at all in saying that Garry Sobers is the greatest all-round cricketer I ever saw,” Bradman said in 1988.

Sobers, however, credited hard work as much as natural ability.

“People call me a genius. I don’t know much about geniuses,” he said later in life.

“But I do believe that what I achieved was not just because of the ability that I was born with but also because I worked hard.”

Born Garfield St Aubrun Sobers in St Michael, Barbados, on July 28, 1936, he overcame a difficult childhood after his father, a merchant seaman, was killed during the Second World War when his ship was sunk by German forces.

Raised by his mother, Thelma, Sobers developed his cricket skills playing on roads and beaches, using improvised equipment fashioned from fence wood and balls made of tar or cloth-wrapped stones.

He made his first-class debut for Barbados at 16 and earned his West Indies Test debut in 1954.

At the age of 21, Sobers announced himself on the world stage with an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, then the highest individual score in Test cricket. The innings also made him the youngest player to score a Test triple century.

Sobers became West Indies captain in 1965 and cemented his place in cricket history three years later while playing county cricket for Nottinghamshire.

In a first-class match against Glamorgan in 1968, he became the first player to hit six sixes in a single over, launching Malcolm Nash’s bowling into the stands six times in succession.

Although the feat became one of cricket’s most celebrated records, Sobers insisted the team’s success mattered more than personal milestones.

“Six sixes are not good cricket,” he said afterwards.

“It was an occasion where we were looking for quick runs. The idea was to try and get as many runs as possible.

“Records must not be the focus… It mustn’t come at the cost of the team.”

Across 383 first-class matches, Sobers scored more than 28,000 runs and claimed over 1,000 wickets, underlining the extraordinary versatility that defined his career.

His career was not without controversy.

In 1970, he toured apartheid-era Rhodesia, prompting criticism across the Caribbean. Sobers later acknowledged he had underestimated public feeling on the issue and apologised, saying he would not have gone had he understood the depth of opposition.

He subsequently declined invitations to play in apartheid South Africa.

Sobers was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in Barbados in 1975 for services to cricket and, in 1998, was named one of Barbados’ 10 National Heroes.

The Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Barbados bears his name.

Sobers was born with an extra finger on each hand, which he removed himself as a child.

“There are those who claim I was destined to do well in life because I arrived in this world with two extra fingers, as though there was something mystic about it,” he once said.

“I wasn’t bothered. They didn’t inhibit me in any way at all.”
