STOCKHOLM, Sweden : Reigning champions Chelsea Women kept their slim Women’s Super League title hopes alive with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Aston Villa Women at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
A late strike from Sjoeke Nuesken sealed the win for Chelsea, who moved up to second place on 40 points, nine behind leaders Manchester City Women, with three games remaining.
Chelsea still have a mathematical chance of winning a seventh straight title but would need to win all their remaining matches while City lose all of theirs.
The hosts fell behind early when Chasity Grant gave Villa the lead, but Chelsea responded emphatically with three goals in eight minutes through Sam Kerr, Naomi Girma and Lauren James.
Villa fought back as Kirsty Hanson scored twice in quick succession to level the match, exposing Chelsea’s defensive frailties once again.
However, Nuesken struck in the 82nd minute to secure all three points in a pulsating encounter.
Elsewhere, West Ham United Women were held to a 1-1 draw by London City Lionesses, while bottom side Leicester City Women were due to face Brighton & Hove Albion Women later on Sunday.
On Saturday, Manchester City tightened their grip on top spot with a 3-0 derby win over Manchester United Women, while Arsenal Women boosted their bid for second place with a 5-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur Women.
