HOUSTON, July 4 (Reuters) – Canada bid an emotional farewell to their historic World Cup campaign on Saturday, thanking supporters for helping transform the country’s football culture after their dream run ended with a 3-0 defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16.
Shortly after the final whistle, Canada Soccer shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, celebrating a tournament that saw the national team reach the knockout stage for the first time and inspire fans across the country.
“Every story has an ending. This one just doesn’t feel like one right now,” the post began.
“Over the last few weeks, we watched an entire country fall in love with this team. Streets filled with red. Living rooms became supporter sections. Kids who once dreamed about wearing the crest of their ancestral homes discovered a new dream.”
Canada’s breakthrough campaign included a first-ever appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds and a victory over South Africa in the Round of 32 before Morocco ended their journey.
The team said the tournament confirmed what many within Canadian football had long believed.
“We’ve always believed this was a football country. Now we know it is.”
The message also paid tribute to supporters who travelled to matches, packed stadiums and cheered from home.
“History wasn’t just made on the pitch. It was made in homes, schools, parks, pubs, and communities across this country,” the post read.
“It was made every time someone chose to believe.”
Despite the disappointment of elimination, Canada ended the message with optimism about the future of the sport.
“Our World Cup journey comes to a close,” the statement concluded.
“Canada’s football journey is only just beginning. See you soon.”
Although their tournament has ended, Canada’s performances marked a significant milestone for the national team and reinforced growing belief that the country’s football future is brighter than ever.
