KANSAS CITY, Missouri :  Jude Bellingham’s match-winning display against Norway ensured a brief disagreement with England manager Thomas Tuchel was quickly overshadowed, as the midfielder again proved decisive in his side’s run to the World Cup semi-finals.

The Real Madrid midfielder scored twice in England’s 2-1 extra-time quarter-final victory on Saturday but appeared unimpressed when informed after the match that Tuchel had described the team’s performance as “sloppy”.

“Yeah, well, whatever,” Bellingham said before defending his teammates after another physically demanding match in sweltering Miami conditions.

The exchange highlighted the contrast between Tuchel’s insistence on high standards and Bellingham’s focus on England’s resilience in reaching the last four.

Although pleased with the result, Tuchel said England had been fortunate to progress after a performance he felt was below the required standard.

“The result is fantastic. We are in the last four. It’s amazing but I’m not happy with the performance,” Tuchel said after the match, describing England as sloppy, error-prone and fortunate to advance.

Bellingham argued the circumstances deserved greater consideration, pointing to the extreme heat and the quality of Norway’s attack, led by Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard.

“Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those conditions against Erling Haaland, Odegaard, (Antonio) Nusa, (Alexander) Sorloth,” Bellingham told reporters. “That’s not an easy team to play against.”

It was not the first public disagreement between the pair.

Last year, Tuchel drew criticism after describing aspects of Bellingham’s fiery on-field behaviour as potentially “repulsive” to some viewers before later apologising and saying the remark had been unintentionally phrased.

Questions also emerged before the World Cup when Tuchel suggested no player, including Bellingham, was guaranteed a place in his starting lineup.

Any doubts over the midfielder’s importance have since been dispelled.

The 23-year-old has delivered in England’s biggest moments, scoring two goals against both Norway and Mexico to help carry his side into the semi-finals and establish himself among the tournament’s standout performers.

Despite his criticism of England’s overall display, Tuchel had no hesitation in praising Bellingham’s contribution.

“Enough said. He does it every single match,” Tuchel said. “World class.”

England will face defending champions Argentina in Wednesday’s semi-final in Atlanta, with Bellingham expected to play a central role as they chase a place in the World Cup final.
