DORTMUND, Germany : Bayern Munich, last season’s domestic double winners, beat hosts Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Saturday to win the German Supercup, with Michael Olise scoring one and setting up another in a commanding first half.
A week before the Bundesliga season begins, Bayern took control of the match with two goals before halftime.
New signing Nathaniel Brown opened the scoring in the 28th minute on his competitive debut, rifling home after being set up by Olise.
The France international then doubled Bayern’s advantage in first-half stoppage time to cap a dominant opening 45 minutes.
Bayern were without midfielder Jamal Musiala, who said this week that he was suffering from a neurological dysfunction after collapsing during two previous friendlies.
“I’m very happy with the win,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. “Michael Olise and Harry Kane trained three times and were able to play 90 minutes.
“Regardless of the result today, it was a statement of energy, fighting for every ball, every situation.
“Some people maybe think we’ll have a drop because we won everything last year. But that won’t be the case, we won’t rest and will try to win everything.”
Dortmund responded strongly after the break, with new signings Giannis Konstantelias and Konstantinos Karetsas going close before the hosts pulled a goal back in the 75th minute.
A swift three-pass move opened up the Bayern defence and Fabio Silva finished to give Dortmund hope, but the hosts could not find an equaliser.
Their task became even harder in the 90th minute when Ramy Bensebaini was shown a straight red card for a foul on Bayern substitute Ismael Saibari.
Dortmund came close in stoppage time when Alexander Beier fired over from close range.
The Bundesliga season begins on Friday, with Bayern hosting VfB Stuttgart.
