Defending champion Alex de Minaur battled past Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 3-6 6-3 to reach the second round of the Mubadala DC Open in Washington on Wednesday.
The Australian needed just over two hours to secure victory, overcoming an erratic serving display that featured eight double faults and four aces. De Minaur claimed the decisive break early in the third set to open a 3-1 lead before serving out the match.
Third seed Taylor Fritz advanced to the quarter-finals with a commanding 6-3 6-4 victory over Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak. The American struck 14 aces, won 90% of his first-serve points (28 of 31) and did not face a single break point.
Fritz will next face fellow American Alex Michelsen, who defeated France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-4 7-6(3).
Another quarter-final will pit Italy’s fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti against Spain’s Rafael Jodar. Musetti defeated Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic 6-3 5-7 6-3, while Jodar eased past Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3 6-2.
Mifel Tennis Open
Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong produced the biggest win of his career by upsetting top seed Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic 1-6 6-3 6-4 in the second round of the Mifel Tennis Open in Los Cabos, Mexico.
The 22-year-old world number 108 fired 16 aces to earn his first victory over a top-20 opponent and match his best ATP Tour result by reaching the quarter-finals.
Wong will play American Jenson Brooksby, who defeated Australian lucky loser Edward Winter 6-3 6-4.
Second seed Luciano Darderi retired with an apparent forearm injury while trailing 3-0 in the opening set against Czech Dalibor Svrcina.
Third seed Francisco Cerundolo advanced after American qualifier Tristan Boyer retired with the Argentine trailing 7-6(4) 4-3.
Australia’s Bernard Tomic upset fourth seed Karen Khachanov 6-2 6-4, while Canada’s eighth seed Denis Shapovalov beat Mexico’s Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez 6-3 6-2.
France’s Arthur Gea recovered from a set down to defeat Michael Zheng 0-6 6-4 6-0.
Fifth seed Cameron Norrie of Britain was scheduled to face Australia’s James Duckworth in the final match of the day.
