BIRMINGHAM, England : Dina Asher-Smith equalled the record for the most European Championships medals after helping Britain win the women’s 4×100 metres relay gold on Saturday, taking her career tally at the continental event to 10.
The British quartet of Amy Hunt, Asher-Smith, Success Eduan and Imani Lansiquot clocked 42.05 seconds to claim a dominant victory.
The gold was Asher-Smith’s seventh European title and, alongside two silver medals and a bronze, moved her level with Polish sprint great Irena Szewinska, who won 10 European Championship medals between 1966 and 1978.
“I am stood next to the real life GOAT,” Hunt told BBC Sport of her teammate Asher-Smith.
For Hunt, the relay triumph completed a third gold medal at the championships after she won the 100m and 200m titles earlier in the week.
The 24-year-old now has the opportunity to make history in Sunday’s mixed 4x100m relay, where she could become the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single edition of the European Championships.
The relay victory also lifted Britain’s medal tally to 12, including six golds. Italy remained top of the medal table with 17 medals heading into the final day.
Asher-Smith, meanwhile, was praised by Hunt for her longevity and success at the continental championships.
“She is the most decorated European athlete in history. I am stood next to some amazing women,” Hunt said. “That was stunning to come together. I had the time of my life.”
