The HSBC Championships in London will feature an all-American quarterfinal after Amanda Anisimova and Iva Jovic both recorded straight-set victories in the Round of 16.
Anisimova Dominates Siegemund
Second seed Anisimova, who received a first-round bye, defeated Laura Siegemund 6-1, 6-3 in just 66 minutes. The American was highly efficient on serve, dropping only four points behind her first delivery, saving the lone break point she faced, and breaking her opponent’s serve four times.
Anisimova continues her strong form on grass after reaching the finals of both the HSBC Championships and Wimbledon Championships last year.
Jovic Cruises Past Eala
Sixth seed Jovic advanced with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alexandra Eala. Despite four double faults, Jovic compensated with four aces and converted five of her seven break-point opportunities.
The win sets up a quarterfinal showdown between two of the tournament’s top American performers.
Mboko Retires with Knee Injury
The day’s biggest concern came when Canadian third seed Victoria Mboko was forced to retire from her match against Karolina Pliskova because of a left knee injury.
Pliskova advanced to the quarterfinals following the retirement.
Mboko is also competing in doubles alongside Serena Williams, who is attempting a comeback at age 44. The pair are scheduled to face Leylah Fernandez and Siegemund in the doubles quarterfinals, although Mboko’s fitness could affect those plans.
Rain Delays Vekic-Bouzkova Match
The Round of 16 match between Donna Vekic and Marie Bouzkova was suspended because of rain and darkness. Vekic held a 6-5 lead in the opening set when play was halted and will resume on Thursday.
Libéma Open: McNally Upsets Navarro
At the Libéma Open in the Netherlands, American Caty McNally completed an impressive comeback to defeat fourth seed Emma Navarro 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
After dropping the first set, McNally dominated the second and held firm after a rain interruption in the deciding set to secure one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.
She will next face Solana Sierra, who overcame Lois Boisson 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Other Results
Players advancing elsewhere in the draw included:
- Anastasia Potapova (No. 5 seed)
- Ajla Tomljanovic
- Hanne Vandewinkel
Meanwhile, the match between Panna Udvardy and Daria Snigur was suspended in the third set, with Udvardy leading 4-2 after the players had split the opening two sets.
Quarterfinal to Watch
The marquee matchup in London will be Anisimova versus Jovic, a battle between two in-form Americans on grass. Anisimova enters as the favorite thanks to her experience and recent success on the surface, but Jovic’s aggressive return game and confidence could make it one of the most competitive quarterfinals of the week.
