Alonso says F1 regulations key to decision on future

Fernando Alonso’s future in Formula One remains uncertain, with the Aston Martin driver saying his decision on whether to continue beyond this season will depend more on the sport’s regulations than the team’s performance.

The 45-year-old Spaniard, one of the most outspoken critics of the new engine regulations, again expressed his frustration while speaking to reporters this week.

“Unfortunately, this is what it is,” Alonso said. “This is not the Formula 1 we grew up with. This is not the Formula 1 that we all want, drivers, spectators. So, we must change a few things; it will not happen immediately. It will happen for the future. But I hope I can contribute somehow for the next set of regulations and we can go back to the real Formula 1.”

Alonso is driving on an expired contract and appears to have limited options elsewhere, with most of the major teams’ seats already committed.

Retirement therefore remains a possibility, although Aston Martin’s improved form in recent races has given the team some encouragement.

A new Honda engine upgrade helped Aston Martin deliver stronger performances in the last two races, but Alonso said that alone would not determine whether he returns in 2027.

“For my decision it is not really about the car,” Alonso said. “I will be professional and working at my 100%, fighting for P15 or fighting for a podium. But for me it is more about the regulations.”

Alonso scored his first points of the season at the Dutch Grand Prix last time out, finishing ninth.

“It was a nice boost for everyone knowing that at least the direction that we are taking is the right one,” he said. “Because we changed a lot of things in the car since Budapest. And obviously we know, we feel that in the corners we are getting in a much better place.”
