GQEBERHA, South Africa : Australia will look to Travis Head to lead their fight for survival against South Africa on the final day of the second Test on Thursday, with uncertainty surrounding Steve Smith’s availability due to a neck injury.
The tourists will resume their second innings on 156-4 after being forced to follow on, with Head unbeaten on 87 and facing the task of batting deep into the fifth day to help Australia avoid defeat.
Australia, who lead the three-match series, face a difficult challenge after being bowled out for just 99 in their first innings, their lowest Test total in a decade.
Head’s aggressive batting has provided some resistance, but the experience of former captain Smith could prove crucial if he is fit enough to return to the crease.
Smith top-scored with 28 in Australia’s first innings despite struggling with a neck injury that required treatment on the field.
The 37-year-old also reached a significant career milestone, becoming only the third Australian to score 11,000 Test runs after Allan Border and Ricky Ponting.
However, his innings ended when he was bowled by Wiaan Mulder, and concerns over his fitness deepened when he failed to appear at his usual No. 4 position in the second innings.
Smith remained in the dressing room wearing a neck brace, leaving Australia uncertain whether they can call upon their most experienced batter as they battle to save the match.
