World number two Alexander Zverev beat Learner Tien 7-6(3), 6-3 on Sunday as Team Europe clinched a 13-5 victory over Team World to win the Laver Cup in London.
Europe led 7-5 heading into the final day, when each match was worth three points and the first team to reach 13 was declared champion.
The Europeans made a strong start in the deciding session as Italy’s Flavio Cobolli and Czech Jakub Mensik defeated top-10 opponents Alex de Minaur of Australia and American Taylor Fritz 7-5, 6-3 in the opening doubles match.
Needing one more victory to secure the title, Zverev delivered with 32 winners to Tien’s 21 and saved all four break points he faced.
The remaining singles matches, which were scheduled to feature Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Jodar against de Minaur and Fritz respectively, were not required.
Team World had won three of the previous four editions of the Laver Cup before Europe’s victory in London. The 2027 event will be held in Los Angeles.
Hangzhou Open
Top seeds Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev battled through three-set quarter-finals to reach the last four in Hangzhou.
Medvedev beat Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3 in two hours and 18 minutes, saving five of six break points and winning 79.4% of his first-serve points.
Rublev needed two hours and 52 minutes to overcome France’s Hugo Gaston 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-1. He converted five of 15 break points and saved two of five against him before racing to a 5-0 lead in the deciding set.
Rublev will face Frenchman Kyrian Jacquet, who defeated sixth seed Fabian Marozsan of Hungary 7-6(12), 6-4.
Medvedev will play Roman Safiullin, who beat China’s Yunchaokete Bu 6-3, 6-3.
Chengdu Open
Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina reached the semi-finals with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over French qualifier Alexandre Muller.
Davidovich Fokina did not face a break point and won 81.3% of his second-serve points. He converted three of seven break opportunities in the 80-minute match.
He will face Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili, who defeated American Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 7-6(4).
Fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland beat qualifier Lloyd Harris 7-6(10), 6-4 despite facing eight break points and being broken once.
Seventh seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada completed the semi-final line-up by beating France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2.
