PARIS : Four-time champion Iga Swiatek eased into the second round of the French Open with a commanding 6-1 6-2 victory over Australian wildcard Emerson Jones on Sunday under bright skies at Roland Garros.
The third-seeded Pole, who has dominated on the Paris clay in recent years, showed little sign of the inconsistent form that has left her without a claycourt title since lifting the Suzanne Lenglen Cup in 2024.
After exchanging early breaks in the opening set on Court Philippe Chatrier, Swiatek quickly took control, dictating play with powerful forehands and relentless baseline pressure.
The 24-year-old briefly required treatment for a blister on her right hand after wrapping up the first set but was otherwise untroubled as she sealed victory in exactly one hour with another emphatic forehand winner.
“I’m just really happy to play on this court; the first matches are for getting used to conditions,” Swiatek said.
“I’m happy with the way I played today, tactically.”
Swiatek has now lost only two matches at Roland Garros in the last six years, underlining her dominance at the claycourt Grand Slam.
However, the world number three acknowledged that her success in Paris also brings greater expectations.
“Nothing comes easy,” she said.
“I feel with more titles it feels harder because everyone expects you to play perfectly, so you have to stay grounded and not take anything for granted.”
Swiatek will face Czech player Sara Bejlek in the second round as she continues her bid for a fifth French Open crown.
