DOHA : Qatar coach Julen Lopetegui is stepping up preparations for the 2026 World Cup as he looks to guide Al Annabi to a strong second appearance at the finals despite disruptions to the team’s build-up.
Qatar, who will play in the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, have seen part of their preparations affected by the cancellation of friendly matches against Serbia and Argentina, forcing the coaching staff to seek alternative fixtures before June.
Since taking charge in May last year, Lopetegui has made World Cup qualification and a respectable showing at the finals his main objectives, and he succeeded in securing Qatar’s place in the tournament through the remaining qualifying matches following his appointment.
The Spaniard had hoped to make full use of the March international window through the current training camp in Doha, where his staff have focused on finding the right balance between experienced players and younger talent.
Qatar are continuing their preparations with a 32-man squad that includes four goalkeepers: Meshaal Barsham, Mahmoud Abunada, Shehab Al Laithi and Salah Zakaria.
Among the outfield players in the camp are Akram Afif, Almoez Ali, Hassan Al Haydos, Pedro Miguel, Boualem Khoukhi, Karim Boudiaf, Lucas Mendes and Bassam Al Rawi.
Qatar have been drawn in Group B at the World Cup alongside Canada, Switzerland and the winners of the first European playoff path.
