WTT Champions 2026: Doha delivers early fireworks

Doha: The 2026 WTT Series has officially sprung to life — and it has done so with conviction.

Doha, a city synonymous with sporting ambition and landmark moments, is hosting a WTT Champions event for the first time, welcoming the world’s elite to the Lusail Sports Arena from 7 to 11 January.

As the season opener in a six-stop WTT Champions calendar, Doha is already setting the benchmark.

The opening two days of Men’s and Women’s Singles Round of 32 action produced a rich mix of power, precision and personality — complete with statement wins, stirring upsets and early signs of who means business in 2026.

Harimoto in control, Winter sends a warning

One of the standout encounters of the opening round saw 17-year-old Miwa Harimoto continue her mastery over Shin Yubin, cruising to another straight-games victory (11-8, 11-8, 11-8). Harimoto’s blend of fearless aggression and tactical maturity proved decisive, as she dictated tempo and placement throughout, extending her head-to-head advantage to 7–1.

Germany’s Sabine Winter was equally ruthless, brushing aside Bernadette Szocs 3–0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-7). Reprising her Montpellier triumph, Winter’s crisp backhand and early timing consistently disrupted Szocs’ rhythm. The German’s strong finish to 2025 appears to have carried seamlessly into the new season.

Matsushima cruises, Jang stuns Lebrun

In the Men’s Singles draw, Sora Matsushima opened his 2026 campaign in assured fashion, easing past Qatar wildcard Mohammed Abdulwahhab 3–0 (11-8, 11-4, 11-8). The reigning WTT Champions Frankfurt winner looked calm and clinical, controlling exchanges with authority and purpose.

The shock of Day 1 belonged to Jang Woojin, who produced a composed and courageous performance to eliminate eighth seed Alexis Lebrun in five gripping games (13-11, 11-5, 14-16, 6-11, 11-6). Lebrun’s flair and invention pushed the Korean to the limit, but Jang’s discipline and mental strength ultimately prevailed — a result that instantly reshapes the draw in Doha.

With the tone firmly set and the stakes rising, WTT Champions Doha 2026 is already living up to its promise.
