Jeddah: Karim Benzema was both relieved and delighted after Al Ittihad Club returned to winning ways in the AFC Champions League Elite™ 2025/26 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over PFC Nasaf at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium on Tuesday.
The Saudi Arabian side had to be patient against a resilient Nasaf defence before Benzema struck in the second half, his decisive effort lifting Al Ittihad to nine points and bringing an end to the Uzbekistan side’s hopes of reaching the Round of 16.
“The match wasn’t easy,” said Benzema. “We knew how difficult and important it was for us. We created many chances, but we didn’t manage to convert them all.
“The most important thing is the three points at home in front of our fans. We didn’t want to waste chances but Nasaf put up a strong fight. We have to work hard and luck will come.”
Al Ittihad dominated possession throughout the contest, delivering a steady supply of crosses and their patient approach was rewarded with head coach Sergio Conceicao pleased with his team’s approach.
“The most important thing was securing the points after a month-long break,” said Conceicao. “We knew the match would be difficult and now we’re only thinking ahead. We created many chances and could have achieved a better result, but I’m happy with the victory.
“We played 31 crosses, which is a good average. If we hadn’t created those kinds of chances, we would have been unhappy.
